Fierce clashes have erupted between Fatah gunmen and Jund el Sham militants in a Palestinian refugee camp in southern Lebanon.

The violence broke out in the Ein el Helweh Palestinian refugee camp, near the city of Sidon on Thursday evening, Yalibnan reported Friday.

Palestinian Security forces were trying to quell the violence, in
which the two sides exchanged fire. There has been no report of
casualties.

Following the fighting, the nearby Palestinian refugee camp of al-Rashidyia near the city of Tyre was put on high alert.

Jund el-Sham is a militant group with alleged links to slain leader
of al-Qaeda in Iraq Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. Although the group in Ein
al-Helweh is also known as Jund el-Sham it is not clear if there is a
link between the Palestinian group and Zarqawi’s militants.

In May 2007, clashes erupted between an al-Qaeda inspired group and
the Lebanese army in another Palestinian refugee camp in northern
Lebanon which led to a long-term stand off that left at least 446
people dead.
